Cub Football - Loyola plays San Diego team in series that dates back 89 years

Loyola looks to rebound against St. Augustine in series that began in 1928
Larry Devlin was Loyola's varsity head football coach in 1928, and he steered the Cubs to a 7-1-2 record, with the only loss being to St. Augustine of San Diego by a 25-0 score. Since then, the Saints and Loyola played nine times, with the Cubs holding a overall 8-2 record. Head coach Bill Sargent was at the helm in in 1945 and 1946 when the Cubs were led by two-time CIF Southern Section Large Schools Player-of-the-Year AL POLLARD, one of the great halfbacks in Southern section history Loyola won the '45 and '46 tilts, 26-0, and by forfeit, respectively.  Jack Bouchard coached the Cubs to 27-6, 27-18, 35-0, and 25-13 victories against St. Augustine in '48 through '50, respectively.

After a 64-year hiatus the San Diego school conducted by the Augustinians and the Jesuit school from Los Angeles renewed their rivalry in the first home game played on Loyola's campus since 1949. The Cubs prevailed in a 42-35 shootout.  The following season Loyola hung on in San Diego for a 23-20 win. Last season at Bob Smith Field the Cubs fell in a down-to-the-wire thriller, 17-14.

On Friday at San Diego Mesa College, both Loyola and St. Augustine will be attempting to get back into the win column. The Saints were upset by Carlsbad, 22-14, on Friday following an impressive season opening, 51-12 victory over Canyon Springs of North Las Vegas. The Cubs are hoping to rebound from a 35-0 blowout loss at the hands of Santa Margarita Catholic.

A look at the Saints
St. Augustine features a rugged defense and balanced offense. Senior tight end/linebacker Andrew Alves (6-2, 225) leads the Saints in tackles. Senior quarterback Ryan Thomas (6-3, 225) has a big arm, and senior running back Deandre Daniels (5-11, 185) leads a strong rushing attack.  Daniels is averaging 5.4 yards per carry. Senior wide receiver J.R. Justice (6-3, 200) is a talented, big target. St. Augustine has two excellent outside linebackers in seniors Tysean White (6-2, 218) and Isaac Hall (6-2, 225). The Saints were 10-3 in 2016.

Loyola will have to play a nearly flawless game on both sides of the ball to defeat one of the best teams in the CIF San Diego Section.  The Cubs will need balance on offense and play defense as it did in the second half against a strong Santa Margarita team on Friday.

The San Diego Chapter of the Loyola Alumni Association has invited all Loyola families, alumni and supporters who are making the trek to what the locals call "America's Finest City" to join their tailgate in Lot #2 at the San Diego Mesa College stadium parking area at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
