California's most prestigious 7-on-7 prep passing tournament of the summer, the Battle at the Beach, hosted by Edison of Huntington Beach is on tap for Saturday, July 8. The field is loaded with the best teams in Southern California and several that are rated in the preseason national top five.
Loyola is in a pool with defending CIF Division I champion St. John Bosco, and the Cubs will open the competition in a game against the Braves and their dynamic signal caller Re-al Mitchell at 9:00 a.m. Following Loyola's contest with Bosco the Cubs will compete against the always aerially prolific Hart Indians at 9:45 a.m.
At 10:30 a.m., the Cubs play Paraclete of Lancaster, coached by Dean Herrington, the former head mentor at Alemany, who has quarterback Brevin White, a transfer from Chaminade, leading the Spirits' passing attack. In the final pool contest at noon, Loyola will take on Mission League rival Serra of Gardena.
One thing is certain - the Cubs will not see better passing opponents during the course of the regular season than they will see in Huntington Beach a week from Saturday.
Loyola has an excellent corps of receivers this season, led by speed merchant ALEX JOHNSON (6-1, 167), a returning two-way starter; senior standout DAKOTA SMITH (6-2, 205); senior TOMMY VANIS (6-1, 210); junior ALEX BLAKE (6-1, 190), senior DEAMIL AGUILAR (5-8, 162), sophomore KEVIN PARADA (5-11, 185) and senior MICHAEL BEARDEN (6-1, 175). The Cubs also have solid receivers out of the backfield, including senior tailback JACOB McBRIDE (5-7, 180); senior MICHAEL GRAVES (5-8, 165) and junior HUNTER BALLARD (5-10, 180).
