Over 400 schools compete in football in the CIF Southern Section. For the first time in Southern Section history, teams will be assigned to playoff divisions in football beginning this fall, which means that all teams from one league will not necessarily be placed in the same playoff divisions. The section rated teams by their records and strength of competition for the last two seasons, and the Cubs were tied for eleventh out of the 22 programs initially selected (subject to change) as Division I (formerly the Pac-5) participants. Only 16 teams will be invited to the playoffs. All seven Mission League schools made the preliminary cut. See the link below for the Los Angeles Times’ article on the news. Loyola has always competed in the highest playoff division. The Cubs have won six CIF titles and have been Large School runners-up six times.
