The Los Angeles Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame honored Stanford-bound Loyola senior KELLY BLAKE as the chapter's Scholar Athlete of the Year at is annual banquet on Friday honoring the top football student athletes in the area.
Joining Blake on the dais were fellow Cub seniors DAVID LONG, JR. (All-CIF and first team All-State corner, headed to Michigan on a football scholarship), KEVIN QUISUMBING (All Mission League two-way lineman, Tufts University), and NOAH UTLEY (All Mission League lineman, U.S. Military Academy at West Point).
The scholar athlete awards are bestowed on those young men who have distinguished themselves with outstanding performance both on the gridiron and in the classroom.
Blake scored 35 out of a possible 36 on the ACT, maintains a GPA that is in the stratosphere and was a ball hawking All-CIF Pac-5 Division safety. He doubled as one of Loyola's best wide receivers on the Cubs' 9-3 playoff squad last fall. He was also one of just 20 senior student athletes in the country who was selected as a U. S. Army-Pro Football Hall of Fame Award of Excellence Finalist.
Long was named recently to CalHi Sports' first team All-State All-Academic team.
The four Cub seniors embody Loyola's ideal of developing well rounded young men who are committed to excellence in all they do.
